Reading is the gateway to knowledge. There is no more valuable learning activity. Our summer reading program is designed to encourage year-round immersion in literature. We also encourage families to read aloud and listen to audio books.
Summer Reading Lists We have provided the following summer reading lists to assist you in selecting the best literature available for each age. The number of books is not as important as the quality of books and the time spent reading. K-1 Grade 2 Grade 3 Grade 4 Grade 5 Grade 6 1,000 Good Books List Suggested Read-alouds American History - Grades 3-6 Summer Reading Journal Students should keep a summer reading journal. While these journals will not be graded, they are a helpful and fun way for students to record progress as they work through the summer lists in preparation for the upcoming year. Lower School students who have completed Summer Reading Journals and reach the recommended grade-level goal will be recognized during the first week of school. 1st-2nd Grade Journals For each book include a page with the title, author, and a picture. Read at least 30 minutes each day. 3rd-6th Grade Journals For each book include a page with title, author, and a brief recommendation. Read with pencil (not highlighter) in hand and underline unfamiliar words. For some of your books you may substitute a drawing for your summary. Read at least one hour each day. Read at least 30 minutes each day. 3rd-6th Grade Journals For each book include a page with title, author, a short summary, and list of characters. Read with pencil (not highlighter) in hand and underline unfamiliar words. Record these words and their definitions in your journal. For some of your books you may substitute a drawing for your summary. Read at least one hour each day. 7th Grade Journals (and up) For each book include a page with the title, author, a short summary, and list of characters. Read with pencil (not highlighter) in hand and underline unfamiliar words. Record these words and their definitions in your journal. Practice taking notes (questions, ideas, themes, etc) in the margins. Underline meaningful sentences or passages. Read at least one hour each day. |
